Serhii Malevych BK ’28 first became fascinated by chemistry as a seventh grader in Ukraine. While he has deepened his knowledge since then, he still makes a point to approach science through the eyes of a curious child. “Chemistry helps us understand how the world around us works, even if we can’t see what’s happening,” he says.
Malevych, who chose Yale for its academic reputation, plans to continue advancing his study of chemistry during his time as an undergraduate. “The chemistry department here is very strong,” he says. “One day, I hope to earn a PhD and then bring what I learn back to Ukraine and potentially teach new generations of students or help to develop our scientific and medical fields.”
In the meantime, Malevych is also taking the opportunity to explore other disciplines, from history to environmental science. During his first semester at Yale, he enrolled in a seminar about theater in education. He and his classmates staged productions of Aurand Harris’s play The Arkansaw Bear for local New Haven Public School students. “It was amazing to see all the work and thought we put into the performance pay off,” says Malevych. “The kids in the audience were so engaged. I’m glad I could contribute to their early interest in theater through this play.”
His curiosity is not limited to just academics. He also loves to learn about the backgrounds and interests of new friends and peers on campus. “Everyone who is here has a passion and a vision. I’m fascinated to hear people’s stories and for the opportunity to share mine,” he says.
Looking ahead, Malevych is excited to have access to so many opportunities that will contribute to his academic and personal growth in the future, including fellowships and study abroad programs. “I feel extremely privileged to attend an institution like Yale. Receiving a scholarship has helped me to focus on my academic studies and has relieved some stress for me and my family,” he says. “I wouldn’t have been able to be here without a scholarship. I feel so grateful for Yale and the resources that Yale alumni were able to provide to support students like me.”
