Advancing Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

A gift to Yale School of Nursing ensures that its advanced practice nursing and midwifery students have the specialized skills and understanding to care for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Yale School of Nursing has received a $7.7 million gift—the second largest donation in the school’s history—to advance care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, or IDD.

The gift, from Susanna Peyton ’83 MSN and John Campbell ’84 PhD, will help arm nurses and midwives with “the right knowledge and advocacy skills as well as with a deep, empathetic understanding of how ableism, communication differences, sensory sensitivities, and, unfortunately, systemic neglect can all have a significant influence in the healthcare experiences of individuals with IDD,” says Associate Dean of Nursing Impact Christine Rodriguez.
