Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin ’78 make a gift toward the major renovation of the Hall of Graduate Studies, now called Humanities Quadrangle. They name the building’s iconic tower in memory of David Swensen ’80 PhD, who managed Yale’s endowment through an era of historic growth.

Yale announces a $163 million gift by Stephen A. Schwarzman ’69 to create a world-class, state-of-the-art campus center, incorporating Commons, a Grove Street Annex, parts of Memorial Hall, and an extensive concourse. The Schwarzman Center will be dedicated to cultural programming and student life.

A $50 million gift is committed to reimagining a James Gamble Rogers landmark. The envisaged Humanities Quadrangle will unite a majority of humanities departments and programs in one building, bolstered by a permanent endowment for humanities programming, intellectual life, and community.

Gifts of $60 million, including a lead gift of $30 million, establish the Tobin Center for Economic Policy. Named for the late James Tobin (pictured), iconic faculty member and Nobel laureate, the center will advance research intended to guide national policy.

The three-year quiet phase of fundraising for the For Humanity campaign begins, before its public launch in 2021. During this time, university leaders will build the nucleus fund to nearly $3.5 billion, thanks to alumni, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations who support Yale and its mission.

Edward P. Bass ’68 commits $160 million toward renovating the Yale Peabody Museum. Bass’s contribution will help to fund the renewal and expansion of the acclaimed museum, which has enjoyed worldwide recognition for its dinosaur fossils, mammal displays, minerals, and anthropology collections.

In recognition of his lead gift toward the building’s construction, Edward P. Bass ’68 names its 500-seat lecture hall in honor of Othniel Charles (O.C.) Marsh, a pioneering professor of vertebrate paleontology at Yale—the first in the United States—and one of the founding figures of Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History.

George and Carol Bauer lead the way with funding for the Living Village, a residential complex for Yale Divinity students that will meet the world’s most exacting standards for environmental sustainability.

Joseph C. Tsai ’86, ’90 JD and Clara Wu Tsai establish the Wu Tsai Institute, a dedicated research initiative uniting hundreds of Yale researchers in an effort to understand the brain and mind at all levels, from molecules and cells to circuits, systems, and behavior.

Timothy A. Steinert ’82 and Lixia Zhang fund renovations of 15 Hillhouse Avenue to house the Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments. Newly refurbished and endowed, the teaching museum combines both performance and scholarship, offering in-person and digital access to the collection’s remarkable holdings.

With a landmark $150 million gift, David Geffen makes Yale’s drama school the only institution of its kind to eliminate tuition for all degree and certificate students, removing financial barriers to access. The school is renamed David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University.

Yale launches the five-year public phase of its ambitious capital campaign, For Humanity. Led by five co-chairs, Josh Bekenstein ’80, Nancy Better ’84, Donna Dubinsky ’77, Randy Nelson ’85, and Lei Zhang ’02 MBA, ’02 MA, it is the largest and most comprehensive campaign in Yale’s history.

Yale celebrates the rededication of Kline Tower, a Science Hill landmark formerly known as Kline Biology Tower, following a top-to-bottom renovation transforming the building into a hub for mathematical, statistical, and data-driven research. The tower’s thirteenth floor serves as the new home of Yale’s Institute for Foundations of Data Science, an interdisciplinary initiative launched in 2022 with a gift from James Attwood, Jr. ’80, ’80 MA, a longtime supporter of the university’s statistics and data science programs.

Yale is named one of three partners that will form a new biomedical research hub announced by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The mission of CZ Biohub New York is to bioengineer immune cells to detect the earliest stages of diseases—potentially allowing clinicians to intervene before patients become symptomatic.

A gift from Stephen Adams ’59 and Denise Adams to the Yale School of Medicine founds the Stephen and Denise Adams Center for Parkinson’s Disease Research. The neurological disorder currently affects an estimated one million people in the United States.

Yale formally dedicates the Wu Tsai Institute. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont pledges a $121 million statewide investment in quantum technology that includes support for QuantumCT, a nonprofit organization co-led by Yale University and UCONN, as well as a first-of-its-kind quantum incubator in New Haven.

The S&L Marx Foundation is transforming Sterling Memorial Library’s historic International Room into the Sterling Library Centennial Common Room. The gift funds a renovation that will elevate a key event space at Sterling Memorial Library to allow for a wider array of functions, from conferences with visiting scholars to ceremonial occasions like the Commencement robing ceremony.

A new commitment from Will Roberts ’90 extends the impact of the Roberts Innovation Fund Awards. Launched in 2022, the prizes provide essential funding, mentoring, and strategic support for Yale faculty-led projects to commercialize breakthrough inventions that solve real-world problems.

Following a comprehensive renovation, the Yale Golf Course reopens to the public. The donor-funded project, conceived by renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, returned the course to the original 1926 vision of designers Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor.
